Sustainable greenhouse heating with the thermeco2 high-temperature heat pump

Heating your greenhouse in a future-proof way is in the interest of many operators. A specialty of ENGIE Refrigeration: At the Osatina Group, a leading food manufacturer from Croatia, ten thermeco2 high-temperature heat pumps ensure a sustainable heat supply in five greenhouses.

  • Ten thermeco2 high-temperature heat pumps with a total heat output of ten megawatts heat five hectares of greenhouses in Croatia.

  • The systems save almost 5,000 tons of CO2, which reduces Osatina's annual costs by over 400,000 euros.

In energy-intensive industries, sustainability, long-term stability of the heat supply and independence from fossil fuels are becoming increasingly important. To fully meet these requirements, the Osatina Group, a leading food producer in Croatia, relies on the heating expertise of ENGIE Refrigeration. The goal: to heat five hectares of greenhouse area with five buildings in a future-proof and efficient manner. The customer wants to take a big step towards climate neutrality and contribute to the positive image of regional horticultural products as "CO2-free vegetables". Our cooling and heating experts offer the ideal solution for this project with the thermeco2 high-temperature heat pump. When heating each individual greenhouse, the heating solution masters different temperature levels: from 40 degrees Celsius for vegetation heating to 85 degrees Celsius for applications that require particularly high temperatures.

Heating the greenhouse all year round

Different heat sources are used: while geothermal energy provides the necessary energy in winter, the thermeco2 high-temperature heat pump generates hot and cold water simultaneously in summer. As a result, the innovative heating solution makes optimum use of the primary energy used - and the customer does not need an additional chiller. This free cooling capacity is used to air-condition surrounding farms and to cool process water. To reliably heat each individual greenhouse, the thermeco2 high-temperature heat pump provides around 5,000 operating hours per year. In doing so, it makes a decisive contribution to the customer's climate protection goals: This is because the high-temperature heat pump generates hot water from environmental heat when heating the greenhouse area, with the majority of the electrical energy required coming from a photovoltaic system. A major plus point: the decarbonization and sustainability aspects of the project have led to it being subsidized by the EU with more than 40 percent of the total investment.
