The sky’s the limit with ENGIE Refrigeration - Hamburg Airport favours products and services by Lindau refrigeration specialist

Hamburg Airport is Germany’s oldest airport and ranks fifth in size, handling more than 17 million flight passengers a year. To ensure that all travellers at the airport can always enjoy a pleasant climate and to keep the technical facilities operating without disruption, air conditioning and process cooling need to be utterly reliable. The airport operator and ENGIE Refrigeration have maintained a partnership for several years now to handle cooling at terminal 1 and on the DFS air traffic controller service’s premises. Thanks to complete satisfaction with the products and technology support by the Lindau-based refrigeration specialist, Hamburg Airport has now decided to extend the contract: at present, ENGIE Refrigeration is collaborating with the engineers from Pinck Ingenieure Consulting to set up new refrigeration technology at terminal 2. Three air-cooled QUANTUM chillers, each with a capacity of 1.35 megawatts and four oil-free Turbocor compressors, have already been installed on the roof of multi-storey car park P5. Among the chillers’ prominent features are their extremely quiet operation and low vibration – an issue of particular importance to the airport operator because the airport is located beside an area that includes residential housing. The QUANTUM models further meet all requirements for maximum efficiency and utmost reliability, an absolute must in terms of safety for a site such as Hamburg Airport. The new chillers will already go online in late April. In the meantime, ENGIE Refrigeration is ensuring that the QUANTUM chillers in terminal 1 supply optimum refrigeration for terminal 2 as well.

ENGIE Refrigeration has been supplying QUANTUM chillers to airports all over the world for ten years now – from Bremen to Sri Lanka to Moscow. At present, more than sixty QUANTUMs with a total capacity of around 56,400 kilowatts ensure reliable, efficient cooling at airports. “Airport operators have particularly strict requirements for refrigeration technology. Our refrigeration systems are as safe as they are reliable, meeting the stringent criteria without fail,” says Jochen Hornung, Managing Director at ENGIE Refrigeration. The refrigeration specialist has customers of many years, among them Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, where ENGIE Refrigeration has installed chillers with a total refrigeration capacity of 45 megawatts.
